The Formula 1 Drivers' Championship is awarded to the driver who accumulates the most points throughout a season. Points are awarded based on finishing positions in each Grand Prix, with additional points available for the fastest lap.
The current points system (as of 2024) awards:
Sprint races award points to the top 8 finishers: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points respectively.
The driver with the most points at the end of the season is crowned World Champion. In case of a tie on points, the championship is decided by the number of first-place finishes, then second-place finishes, and so on.
Points are awarded to the top 10 finishers in each Grand Prix. The current system awards 25 points for 1st place, 18 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, 12 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 8 for 6th, 6 for 7th, 4 for 8th, 2 for 9th, and 1 for 10th.
If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of points, the championship is decided based on the number of first-place finishes. If they have the same number of wins, it goes to the number of second places, then thirds, and so on until a winner is determined.
The current points system was introduced in 2010, with 25 points for a win. It was modified in 2019 to include a point for the fastest lap. The points system has changed several times throughout F1 history, with different eras using different scoring methods.
Driver standings are updated after each Grand Prix. As drivers accumulate points throughout the season, their positions in the standings can change dramatically. Early season standings often look quite different from the final championship results, especially as teams develop their cars and adapt to different circuits.
Sprint races award points to the top 8 finishers (8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points respectively). These points count toward the Drivers' Championship just like points from the main Grand Prix, allowing drivers to gain additional points on sprint race weekends.
